In a building on the opposite side of the encampment, Jenny lay on her bed gritting her teeth and holding her stomach. She was going to give birth soon. To a child that she had no idea how or where it came from. She wasn’t alone in this fate. Several of the women had already given birth, all females, all within three months of realizing they were pregnant. The babies had been healthy and fully matured despite the short pregnancy. Human rules didn’t apply, giving Jenny a good idea of the father’s origin. Most assuredly it was the Adita.

As bad as it was finding out she was pregnant, it didn’t compare to Ed’s reaction upon being with her for the first time since they’d been taken from Paru. Her heart broke for him, but he’d been strong and made the best of the situation. He focused on her wellbeing and they focused on each other during the short periods of time allowed to be together. Not all the men took things as well as Ed. Kyle had to hold Colin back from charging the guards. She’d felt as bad for him as she did Ed. Her predicament reminded him of what Charlie had gone through at the hands of her father. Colin had an ax to grind and Jenny worried that one day it would get him killed.

Turning on her side to ease the pressure, Jenny tried to find a comfortable position to rest. No luck. She rolled onto her back and took a deep breath, closed her eyes and thought of Ed and Ryan. Normally this helped calm her nerves, but today nothing was working. Jenny pushed herself into a sitting position and swung her legs over the side of the bed. With her feet flat on the floor, she pushed herself into a standing position. Something wasn’t right.

“Jenny, what are you doing out of bed?”

“I’m fine Liu.” She smiled at her friend. “Just can’t get comfortable.” Liu, who was also near term, had become Jenny’s closest friend. The two women looked out for one another. Jenny waddled over to Liu’s bed.

Lee moved over, ordering Jenny to sit.

“Ok, but you’ll have to help me get up. I can only manage that once a day,” Jenny replied, plopping down on the corner of the bed.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing I guess. Just a feeling, you know, that maybe something bad has happened.” Jenny glanced towards the opposite end of the ward where a female Adita sat. She didn’t look their way.

“Do not dwell on bad things, Jenny. Will do you no good.”

“I know. I just can’t shake this feeling. I just hope Ed is ok. That they all are ok.” She angrily wiped away the tears threatening to fall. “Let’s not talk about it. Tell me that story again about when you and Jun went skydiving.”

Liu took Jenny’s hand. “Ed is fine, and you have heard skydiving story many, many times already. How about I tell you new one?”

“I thought I’ve heard them all?”

“I make one up just for you.
